10 Mindfulness Products To Boost Your Mental Health

||||||||||||||Give Yourself Kindness Journal

Being human can be complex, miraculous and sometimes difficult. Our mental health can fluctuate throughout our lives, caused by any number of internal and external factors. Thankfully, overtime, there has been overdue but vital awareness and action surrounding mental health. As we collectively, as a society, and individually come to understand the importance of wellbeing that encompasses not just the body but the soul and mind too.

However, many things we now deem as social norms that can also be taking a toll on our mental health. Multiple studies have found a strong link between heavy social media use and an increased risk for issues like depression, anxiety and loneliness (HelpGuide). Meanwhile, according to Re-wilding Britain, people in modern industrial societies spend 90% of their time indoors in artificial, temperature-controlled environments. There is a wealth of research that illustrates how disconnection from nature is linked to mental and physical illness, from anxiety and depression, to heart disease and fatigue.

Is sheep wool good for people and planet?

|||||||

November kicked off with World Vegan Day on the 1st, a welcome reminder of the importance of opting for plant power. When it comes to vegan clothing, the leather debate is often a hot topic and one which both consumers and brands are already highly engaged. Attempting to answer the question ‘Can Leather Ever Be Sustainable?’ is something we’ve also deep dived into before.

The thing with animal leather, is that it can only be attained when an animal is killed, typically a cow. The death of another living being is an essential step in the production of animal leather. Whilst there are complex nuances to the ethics surrounding pleather (often made from PVC), there are many innovations in the form of plant-based leather that are helping to drive the way for truly ethical and sustainable leather alternatives.

But of course, leather isn’t the only animal-based material present in fashion. Sheep’s wool, cashmere (goat) and alpaca wool are also frequently occurring fibres in our clothing. The key distinction between these and leather, is that the animal itself does not have to be killed to obtain the material. In that regards, it would seem that clothing made from such animal fibres are more ethical. So, is this true?

Why did we use animal fibres in the first place?

Natural fibres have traditionally been used in all cultures of the world to meet basic requirements of clothing, storage, building material, and for items of daily use such as ropes and fishing nets. The fibres used often depended on the local availability (Textile School).

Animal fibres such as wool, cashmere and alpaca are also highly regarded when made into garments, for desirable properties such as “soft touch, warmth, beautiful drape, excellent comfort in wear and, using modern synthetic dyes, unparalleled colouration possibilities with very few shade restrictions” (Bruce A. McGregor).

Wool alone currently accounts for 0.9% of the world’s global fibre market. In 2021 around 1.2 billion sheep produced around 1,945 2 million kilograms of raw wool for home and clothing textiles (IWTO).

The wool pulled over our eyes

The practice of obtaining wool and sheep shearing is, for many, underpinned by positive mental imagery, with sheep roaming freely across the countryside, with the occasional shearing to maintain their coats and keep the comfortable. As idyllic this mental image is to believe, it’s sadly often not the case.

A few years ago, ethical clothing company Patagonia discovered animal cruelty practices in what they had believed were ethical farms. The world has also been shocked by many undercover exposés revealing mulesing and tail docking, painful “surgical” practices legally performed with often with no pain relief (Good On You).

According to the RSPCA, mulesing is a painful procedure that involves cutting crescent-shaped flaps of skin from around a lamb’s breech and tail using sharp shears, making mulesed sheep less susceptible to flystrike in the breech area. Mulesing is usually carried out during lamb ‘marking’ when the lamb is between 2 to 10 weeks of age, which can encompass other painful procedures that are carried out at the same time: tail docking, castration (removing testicles in ram lambs), ear notching or tagging, and vaccinating.

Aside from concerning ‘standard’ surgical practices, there are also sustainable considerations to take into account when it comes to wool, as it is the highest greenhouse gas emitter during the fibre production phase compared to all other fabrics. Sheep release huge amounts of methane into the atmosphere, which directly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and therefore, global warming (Sustainably Chic).

The importance of nuance in difficult conversations

As part of their ongoing ‘#IMadeYourFabric stories campaign, Fashion Revolution shared an Instagram post of a sheep farmer holding a sign saying ‘I Made Your Wool’. However, the post was met with criticism and backlash with comments like “Sheep made the wool… Not humans.”, “Exploiting animals isn’t something to be proud of. There’s other alternatives.” and “Total ethics fashion protects everyone: people, the planet, and animals — who are not commodities ❤️”.

Despite the campaign helping to bring a voice and transparency to the people in our fabric supply chains, the comments demonstrated a shift in attitudes towards how we consumers view animals (moving away from them being a commodity to sentiment beings). Of course, farmers need to make a living, but in this day and age, there are more future-proof options becoming available. Research conducted by The University of Sheffield (2020), found that sheep farmers would no longer need government subsidies if they allowed land to return to forest. Sheep farming is currently unprofitable without subsidies, but farmers could earn money by growing trees and selling carbon offsetting certificates – just one alternative which would benefit sheep and the planet.

Personal ethics will naturally also play a role in what you do or don’t deem to be ethical. However, with so many plant-based, natural fibres available to us, the justification for using virgin animal fibres seems less and less excusable or necessary. The industrialised scale of farming for animal fibres is increasingly seeing animal welfare and wellbeing compromised in pursuit of profit. When animals are deemed nothing more than a commodity for human use and disposal, their unique and individual sense of being is diminished.

If we stopped breeding sheep for our own use and abuse, eventually only wild sheep who don’t need shearing would exist and they would be able to live freely (Animal Liberation).

So what are the alternatives?

Granted, sheep wool is a more biodegradable choice than oil-based synthetic fibres. However, when we take all available fibres and materials we have today, it still ranks poorly for both ethics and sustainability, in comparison to plant-based natural (i.e. organic cotton) and synthetic (i.e. Tencel) fibres.

There are ways we can limit the need for virgin wool and other animal fibres thanks to both more mindful consumer habits as well as innovations and suitable alternatives in the forms of plant-based natural fibres or even lab grown fibres.

Many people also believe wool to be an essential material for knitwear. But we are living proof that we no longer need to rely on- better yet, exploit- other living beings to produce the materials for our clothing.

Knitwear for the modern era: Genes

Many of us may have or still do associate wool as a necessity for cozy and stylish knitwear, but we needn’t have. There are so many vegan-friendly alternatives that offer all the same qualities to the wearer, without any of the exploitation.

One of our the newest additions to our growing Veo family is an example of just that. GENES is a long-lasting knitwear brand created and based in Lima, Peru. They make pieces only with natural fibres to ensure their quality over time and to reduce their impact on the environment.

The brand’s mission is to offer long-lasting knit garments, bringing awareness to the impact of slow fashion in caring for our environment, opting for materials like Peruvian Pima cotton.

Their goal is to inspire people to select rather than accumulate and to promote responsible consumption. That is why they produce timeless garments designed to be worn and kept in good condition through the years. Each piece is inspired by nature and art for its colours, fluidity, spaces and shapes. GENES was born out of a love for versatility and visual experience.

Good things are worth fighting for

When it comes to making changes across the fashion and textiles industry, there’s rarely ever quick fixes. Farming, production, manufacturing and distribution systems are global, intertwined and complex. Therefore, given the current dependency on animal fibres, making the switch or transition away from them is not going to happen overnight. But brands like Genes, alongside countless others (like Will’s Vegan, Tikauo and Komodo), are proof that the future doesn’t have to be animal dependent. We can still access beautiful knitwear, soft fabrics and textiles, without the need for sheep (or any other animals for that matter).

How to bring more hygge into your life

|||||||||||

Winter is a season of duality for many of us here in the UK. The excitement and anticipation of Christmas and holiday season parties are also met with cold, dark, winter days and nights. But in the midst of the Christmas chaos and the sudden drop in temperatures and daylight, there is opportunity to embrace the simple, the cosy and the comforting. How? Through a little something the Danish like to call “hygge”.

The hearty origins of hygge

Hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”) is a Danish originating term and concept, that has gained huge popularity across Europe and the wider world in recent years. But what does hygge actually mean?

According to the Google definition, it is ‘quality comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture)’. In essence, hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people (VisitDenmark).

Although hygge is essentially a feeling, the tangible means to achieving hygge in your own life can often be through simple things. The things that spark joy, a sense of comfort and home, for you. Whilst hygge is a state of being that can be acquired all year round, across all the seasons, there is something about hygge in the depths of winter that intertwines so beautifully with the warmth of Christmas.

That overlap, is arguably the antidote to any winter blues and maximising that feeling of Christmas spirit. If you’ve enjoyed a hot chocolate by an open fire, or snuggled up to watch a movie as rain or snow falls outside, you’ve probably experienced hygge, because above all else, hygge is a feeling.

Anti-pollution skincare saviours

||||||||||||||||||

From skin cycling to slugging, maintaining healthy skin is serious business! And while we’re sure you’ve probably got your exfoliate, retinol, recovery, and repeat routine down to a science, there’s one external factor you might not have considered: air pollution.

According to the World Health Organisation, air pollution is now considered to be the world’s largest environmental health risk, with levels here in the UK far exceeding the recommended air quality levels needed for a healthy lifestyle.

With harmful toxins being both inhaled and absorbed through the skin, prolonged exposure to air pollutants can wreak havoc not only on our respiratory health but our skin too, causing a range of issues including premature ageing, sensitivity, inflammatory flare-ups, and more!

Introducing, anti-pollution skincare! These skin saviours protect against pollutants and deeply cleanse the skin using active natural ingredients.

So how exactly does anti-pollution skincare work?

Antioxidant-rich formulas containing Vitamins A, C or E work to protect and defend your skin from free radicals that can form as a result of chemical reactions on the skin which can cause premature ageing and dullness. Other formulas which contain activated charcoal, algae, kelp, or even green tea can help to ‘detox the skin’, drawing out toxins and impurities.

What are the best anti-pollution skincare products for cleansing, protecting, and detoxing?

This is no surprise considering the growing awareness around the impact plastic has on our environment and the need for eco-friendly alternatives. Self-Care in the Stress Age: Nature’s Journey on the antidote for modern living

Nature's Journey|Nature's Journey Product Flatlay|||||||||||||

As April unfolds, it not only brings the vibrant colours of spring but also serves as a poignant reminder: it’s Stress Awareness Month. In 2024, amidst the hustle and bustle of our daily lives and mounting social issues worldwide, this annual campaign is arguably more important than ever. This year’s theme, #LittleByLittle, set by The Stress Management Society, underscores the significance of small, consistent steps towards self-care and stress reduction, highlighting their profound impact on mental health and overall wellbeing over time.

In the spirit of this theme, we caught up with Nature’s Journey to explore how they champion wellness through their brand and activities. Join us as we unravel the secrets behind their holistic approach to self-care and discover how their CBD products and practices can pave the way to a more balanced and harmonious existence. Plus, uncover discounted product bundles designed to help you bring a little more balance and self-care into your life – exclusive to Veo!

Hi Leighton, we’d love to get kick things off by hearing the story behind your wellness brand’s creation? Was it a personal journey?

Co-founders of Nature’s Journey (from left to right): Leighton Atchison-Warne, D’Arcy Bond, Pip Elborne.

I’ve worked in the beauty and wellness industry for most of my career, working with some of the biggest names in the business, so I’ve long been convinced of the power of plants to transform how we look and feel – but it was a chance meeting with my now co-founders that led to the creation of Nature’s Journey.

They introduced me to the incredible benefits of CBD – not just for the skin, but for the mind, too. We realised that together, with my knowledge and experience in the industry, and their expertise in cultivation and harvesting of CBD that we had a unique opportunity to do something special, and so Nature’s Journey was born.

Your brand’s mission seems spot-on for today’s world. How do you see Nature’s Journey fitting into people’s lives and why is it crucial for to prioritise self-care, especially in stressful times?

At the heart of our brand is our mantra: ‘an antidote for modern living’ – they’re some of the first words I wrote in my notebook during one of our initial planning sessions, and they’re always front of mind for me.

I really wanted Nature’s Journey to be a brand that people could rely on. A range that offered them the opportunity to take a few moments, every day for themselves.

I think self-care has become a slightly over-used phrase in the past few years – but for me, the interesting thing is that it’s become less about bubble baths and face packs and more about small wins that help you feel more like you again.

Stress affects us all in different ways – for some, it can mean tossing and turning all night, while for others, our mood is affected, or our skin starts misbehaving, so we’ve created products that genuinely help to address these concerns, and aside from the physical benefits of using a great product, there’s the secondary benefit of taking some time to nurture yourself…

Time for a quick crash course! What exactly is CBD, who is it for and why is it making waves in the wellness scene?

(Answered by the Scientific Advisor at Nature’s Journey) CBD is short for cannabidiol and refers to the non-intoxicating component of the hemp plant. It’s a naturally occurring compound, one of many other closely related compounds within the plant which, together are referred to as cannabinoids.

While it feels like CBD is a relatively recent discovery, it has been around for a lot longer. Hemp was in fact one of the earliest plants cultivated by humans, its properties have been used for over 3,000 years, particularly in Asia within Chinese herbal pharmacopeia. It’s only in the last 100 years that its beneficial properties are starting to be identified and fully understood. A significant amount of pre-clinical evidence suggests topical application of CBD may be effective for some skin disorders, such as eczema, psoriasis, inflammatory conditions like acne, and in neutralising free radical damage.  Although confirmed clinical efficacy and elucidation of underlying molecular mechanisms have yet to be fully identified.

If someone’s on the hunt for a mood boost or some serious relaxation, what would you recommend from your skincare and aromatherapy product lineup?

If you’re struggling to relax and unwind, I’d recommend The Slow Down Duo (£15, worth £23). A good night’s sleep is essential – and this power couple is the perfect tonic. Just apply a little of the Relax Aromatherapy Rollerball to pulse points (I especially love to massage it into my temples) and spritz our bestselling Sleep Easy Pillow Mist around your bedroom a few minutes before you cosy up for the night. You can thank me later!

If, like me, you get an energy slump mid-afternoon and are tempted to reach for caffeine or a sugary treat, try our Revive Aromatherapy Blend (£13) in your electric diffuser. It’s a cheerful blend of Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Sweet Orange and Geranium essential oils and it really does help to lift the spirits when you need it most.

Then there’s The Self-Care Ritual (£20, worth £30) – I just love this collection (and it’s great value too!) featuring three of our best-sellers for glowing skin and a dreamy night’s sleep. Want restful sleep when both home and away? The Sleep Easy Duo (£20, worth £28) ensures you’re never without a bedtime saviour with, this exclusive duo of our best-selling blend is perfect for travel.

And finally – don’t leave home without The Mindfulness Ritual (£30, worth £39). Think of it as a first aid kit for your mood! Featuring all three of our signature scents in our handy aromatherapy rollerball. Perfect for a mindful moment on-the-go.

In line with April being Stress Awareness Month, how does your brand play a role in promoting holistic relaxation and self-care?

Isn’t it ironic that one of the only times we properly take care of ourselves is when we’re sick? We drink more water, we eat nutritious food, we get outside for some fresh air, we rest… and yet, when we’re ‘well’, we often neglect these things.

Taking proper care of yourself is essential for long term health and wellness, and as the saying goes ‘you can’t pour from an empty cup’, and I believe that something as simple as taking time to really nurture your skin, or to take 5 minutes for some mindfulness practice can really help promote a feeling of holistic wellness.

One thing that I’ve always been super passionate about is scent – and more specifically, aromatherapy. Each of our signature scents are far more than just ‘nice smells’, they’re specifically blended to help restore emotional equilibrium.

Can you tell us more about the eco side of things? How do you keep things ethical and in line with the wellness ethos?

I think that in today’s world, you can’t have one without the other. You can’t be a brand that is promoting wellness, taking care of yourself, and doing good for your body if you’re damaging the planet in the process. It just doesn’t make sense.

When we created Nature’s Journey, we knew what kind of brand we wanted to be, and we designed our brand around that vision. We know that consumers are increasingly looking to brands to do the right thing, not the easy thing.

So, for example, we decided to use glass packaging for our range – it’s more expensive for us than buying plastic. But it’s the right thing. It’s infinitely recyclable and helps protect the product from heat and light. We use uncoated papers and never use laminates so that our cartons can be recycled, too. And we always make our products in small batches, so we never make more than we need, avoiding landfill or waste. We’re also proud to be the first CBD wellness brand to be certified by The Vegan Society, and Leaping Bunny approved. We know we’re not perfect – and there’s still a way to go, but it’s something we care deeply about.

Congratulations on the pending B Corp status! That’s a big achievement. We also hear that you’ve recently had a lot of success at the Beauty Shortlist Awards! Could you tell us more about that and any other highlights you’re especially proud of?

One thing that we were particularly keen to do when creating Nature’s Journey was not only to create amazing, ethical wellness – but also to be a great place to work and a great brand to work with, so for us, B Corp certification seemed like an obvious choice. As you guys at Veo know, it’s a tough and rigorous process – and we’re still on our journey to full certification later in the year, but it just made sense. I love that more and more brands are joining the movement and together, we are creating a force for good.

The beauty and wellness industry is BIG business – and so as a new brand, one of the most important things for us was to get people to discover our range. Maybe we’re biased, but we believe that our range really does deliver on its promises – so we’ve been thrilled to receive so many awards and accolades for our range since we launched. It’s testament to the quality of the formulations and such a huge boost for our small team. And the awards keep coming! – but our lips are sealed for now….!

What’s on the horizon for your wellness brand? Any big plans or dreams to spread the word about CBD and wellness even further?

We’re a small team with big ambitions – and we’re just getting started. We know there’s still a lot of misinformation out there about the safety and efficacy of using CBD, so we’re on a mission to help debunk the myths and help everyone discover the amazing benefits that it can bring to the skin and mind. We’re working hard on some new additions to our range as well as planning some exciting events and pop ups this year, too.

How to make your grocery shop more eco-friendly

eco-friendly grocery shop|||||||

According to a report released in March 2020 by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), British households produce over 26 million tonnes of waste each year; around 6.6 million tonnes of this is food waste. Even more shocking is the fact that over 70% of the food waste thrown away annually, is food that could have been eaten. A weekly/monthly trip to the supermarket is something most of us do on autopilot, not really thinking about the wider impact we might be having. However, there are small changes that we could all be making that would greatly help to reduce the amount of household and food waste we produce. Today we’re breaking down some easy ways to make your grocery shop more eco-friendly. Keep reading to find out more!

Use up everything in your kitchen first

Credit: Toa Heftiba

The first step to having a more eco-friendly grocery shop starts at home. Far too often we let the excitement of heading to the supermarket cloud our judgement of how much we actually need. How many times have you bought something, only to open the cupboards and find that you already had it? Go through your cupboards (and the back of the fridge) before you head out shopping. If you have left over produce or ingredients, it’s time to get creative! Head to websites like Pinterest to discover new recipes that you can recreate using what’s already in your kitchen.

Plan your shop ahead of time

Credit: Ella Olsson

Once you know what you actually need, it’s time to plan. Create a menu for the week or month and decide what meals you want to eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner and anything in between. This will mean you can decide exactly what you need to buy and can avoid purchasing food that you won’t end up eating. Make a thorough list and stick to it! There’s no better feeling than knowing the overnight oats you prepped the night before are waiting for you when you wake up!

Buy only what you need or can comfortably store

Credit: Nadia Pimenova

Another way to avoid excess is to only buy what you are able to comfortably store in your home. If you find yourself regularly running out of space in the fridge/freezer, and having to store chilled food in the cupboard, there’s a good chance your food will end up going bad and being thrown away. This can especially be the case if you tend to buy in bulk. Avoid this by knowing the capacity of your home and not buying more than you can keep. If you’re looking for ways to maximise the space you do have, invest in refillable storage jars for your food. Not only do they tend to take up less space than food left in packaging but they also enable you to see exactly how much you have available. And if you are able to visit a ‘zero waste’ store local to you then you can refill your containers and jars without creating any waste- super win!

Use reusable shopping bags

Credit: Gaelle Marcel

Since the introduction of the 5p bag charge, the sale of single-use plastic bags has reduced by 95% since 2015 (The Guardian, 2020). While this is amazing, we can all slip up now and then, forgetting to bring reusable shopping bags with us. To make this easier, keep your shopping bags somewhere that you can always access them e.g. by the front door, in your car, on your bike, or in your rucksack.

Shop local where possible

Credit: Tim Mossholder

There are several benefits to shopping locally rather than using mainstream supermarkets. Not only are you helping to support your local businesses, but you are also more likely to find loose, fresh produce without the packaging. Shopping locally also means you can avoid a lengthy car trip to the nearest superstore by choosing to stay more close to home. At Veo we work with independent brands around the UK and globally, so you can identify products and support brands close to you.

Buy versatile ingredients that can be used for multiple meals

Finally, while it can be fun to try experimental dishes now and then, if you are buying more specialist ingredients than you need, you’ll often end up with leftovers that can’t be used for anything else. Instead, stick to versatile ingredients that can work throughout the month for multiple dishes. This way, you’ll be more likely to use up everything you have without throwing any food away.

When it comes to sustainability, the fashion industry still has a very long way to go. An addiction to extremely low prices and fleeting trends has resulted in a ‘fast-fashion’ culture that is destroying the planet at an alarming rate. The fashion industry is the second-largest polluter in the world, after the oil industry, producing an estimated 3.3 billion tonnes of CO2e (Fixing Fashion, UK Parliament, 2020). While there is an argument to be made for the positive impacts of making fashion more accessible regardless of income, the unfortunate negative impacts of fast fashion vastly outweigh any positives that may exist.

This week is #FashionRevolutionWeek, a movement created by Fashion Revolution, in response to the tragedy of the Rana Plaza garment factory collapse back in 2013. Eight years later, fashion brands still continue to profit from unethical practices with little being done to regulate them. This past year in particular, fashion brands were under scrutiny for failing to pay garment workers for canceled orders, in an attempt to reduce their losses from the pandemic. This left many garment workers unemployed and resulted in a global call on social media for these companies to #PayUp. It is clear that more and more people are considering the impact that their fashion choices have on the wider community and environment as a whole. So for today’s blog post, we’re sharing some easy ways to buy less, choose well, and make it last with slow fashion.

1. Stop following trends and develop your own style

Much of the appeal of fast fashion comes from being able to rock the same trends as your friends, your favourite celebrity, or influencer. We get it, being able to emulate the people you admire can feel empowering, especially when those Instagram likes start pouring in! But the confidence boost you get from creating your own unique look; that’s a feeling that doesn’t go away with the next big trend. By developing your own style, not only will you feel more comfortable with what you wear, but you also won’t break the bank (or the planet) buying more clothes than you need, just to throw them away with the new season.

2. Seek out high-quality, versatile pieces

When it comes to making better fashion choices you essentially have two options. Option 1: you can spend money purchasing lots of low-quality pieces that are trendy right now but are cheap enough to discard once the ‘gram has seen them. Option 2: you can spend the same amount of money buying fewer pieces that are high-quality, go with almost every outfit, and will last for the next few years. We are all guilty of thinking we get good value from Option 1, proudly telling our friends the long list of things we bought and getting them to guess how much we got it all for. But it’s not long before all those pieces end up at the back of your wardrobe, never to be worn again. The true value comes from having a wardrobe you can mix and match to create classic outfits that you’ll wear time and time again.

3. Look for environmentally-friendly materials

It takes around 2700 litres of water to produce just one cotton t-shirt. So if you’re really looking to reduce your impact on the environment, it’s time to take a closer look at the materials in your clothing. Avoid conventional cotton, polyester, acrylic, nylon, and viscose which are difficult to recycle, utilise excessive resources, and release hazardous dyes and microplastics into the environment, disrupting ecosystems. Instead, look for organic alternatives such as organic cotton, organic hemp, and organic linen or recycled alternatives such as recycled cotton or recycled polyester (rPET). Recycled polyester in particular is made from plastic bottles and is therefore, a great way to support the reduction of plastic waste that would otherwise end up in landfill. New and innovative biomaterials are being created every day using anything from pineapple leaves (Pinatex) to grape skins. Check out ACBC, a brand that makes innovative footwear that is comfortable and versatile, made entirely from recycled and bio-based materials.

4. Take better care of the clothes you have

Even if you can’t replace your entire wardrobe with eco-friendly fabrics and materials, one thing we can all do is take better care of our clothes. Simple things like checking the care instructions can ensure your clothes don’t become worn out and dull over time. Washing your clothes less frequently in general not only helps maintain the quality of your clothing but is also better for the environment as it reduces water waste and water pollution from detergents and microplastics. Another great way to make your clothes last longer is to learn how to do basic repairs. Being able to replace a button or stitch up a small rip in your clothing means you can avoid throwing away pieces that are otherwise still wearable.

5. If you must buy fast fashion, buy it second-hand

While ideally, we’d love to avoid fast fashion altogether, it’s a process. We understand that shopping from sustainable brands only can be a challenging transition due to lack of accessibility, financial restrictions, and more. So if for any reason you have to buy something from a fast fashion brand, avoid creating additional demand by shopping second-hand. There are countless platforms that allow you to buy and resell clothes you are no longer wearing, helping to promote a circular economy. By only purchasing second-hand fast fashion, not only are you keeping these products out of landfill for longer, but it’s cost-effective as well!

And if you’re looking for a platform to get you started on your transition, you’ve come to the right place. Check out our Fashion section to discover the best, fashion-forward, sustainable brands on the market!

How to declutter your home sustainably

Minimalism. Some people believe it’s the ultimate path to enlightenment while others think it is something only the privileged few can afford to think about. Whatever your opinion might be, one thing we can all agree on is that much of our lives are overwhelmed by stuff. The average household has around 300,000 items. On average, 1 in 2 people in the UK admit to holding onto things for longer than they should while 1 in 3 say they don’t like the idea of parting with their possessions. But why does having ‘too much stuff’ matter, you may ask? Not only does clutter increase the levels of cortisol (the ‘stress hormone’) in your body, but studies have shown that it can also trigger coping behaviours such as overeating. With clear negative impacts on both mental and physical health, you might be thinking it’s time for a clear out. However, the problem with decluttering is that it can very easily become a wasteful practice. In an effort to achieve that elated feeling that comes from a clean space, we often throw out things that could have been utilised in a much more sustainable way. So we’re sharing some useful tips to help you declutter your home sustainably.

BEDROOM & WARDROBE

If you’ve read our recent blog post on making better fashion choices, you might be feeling the urge to give your wardrobe a reset. However, simply throwing out all your fast fashion pieces is not the way forward. Rather than allowing your unwanted clothes to end up in landfill, it’s important to find ways to extend their life cycle. One option that we typically turn to is donating to charity shops however this may not always be the most sustainable option. Unfortunately, many charity shops have far more clothing than they can sell and particularly in the case of fast fashion pieces, the low quality means they are often impossible to shift. So what happens to those clothes that no one wants? They usually end up being sold abroad, dumped on African economies to deal with, eroding their local textiles industries and polluting their environments as a result. So what’s the alternative? First of all, if your items are still wearable and just need minor repairs, keep them in a separate pile and take them to your local tailoring service to mend. Give your unwanted pieces to people who will actually use them. Do clothing swaps with your friends and family, sell your clothes online, or simply donate them to someone for free! And if you do need to replace any pieces, shop from brands that are ethical and sustainable – click here to discover more.

BATHROOM & BEAUTY PRODUCTS

With skinmalism trending and a return to more ‘natural beauty’ on the rise, there’s a good chance you’ll want to downsize your beauty cabinet. But like anything else in your home, throwing away a half-full bottle of foundation or an unused eyeshadow palette doesn’t get rid of the clutter, it just creates more waste. Of course, if a product gave your skin a horrible reaction or has expired, it should be thrown out. However, if being in lockdown has meant you just haven’t used something as much as you thought you would, don’t count it as clutter – just start using it! With restrictions easing and many of us going out more, now is the perfect time to try a new look and use up some of those beauty products you’ve been holding onto. If you have products that are unopened that you don’t see yourself using any time soon, give them to a friend or family member who will make good use of them. When you do finally run out of beauty products, you can find clean, cruelty-free replacements right here on Veo.

KITCHEN & PANTRY

Credit: Nadia Pimenova

A popular way that people choose to make their homes more sustainable is by adopting a zero-waste approach to organising their kitchen. This can often mean purchasing tonnes of new jars and baskets for your food, in order to re-create that aesthetically pleasing pantry you saw online. While we totally get how satisfying it is watching those ‘homemaker gurus’ organise their homes to perfection, buying more to have less isn’t really the answer. Chances are, you already have some perfectly good Tupperware that could do the same job. Sure they don’t all match and your cupboards might not look ‘Pinterest-worthy’ but it means that instead of throwing out those plastic takeaway containers, you can actually make use of them, have less plastic waste, and ultimately less stuff. That’s the goal, right?

So essentially, the most sustainable way to declutter isn’t necessarily about getting rid of all your things but finding ways to make better use of what you have, reducing your waste, and shopping more consciously when you do need something new. The Ultimate Guide To Vegan Leather

Can leather ever be sustainable? We ranked different types of leather from most to least sustainable based on their impact on animals and the environment. Best: plant-based leather, Not Great: plastic leather, Worst: animal leather

When it comes to sustainability, the fashion industry needs to step up. With consumers increasingly calling for brands to reduce their environmental impact and adopt more ethical, transparent practices, many fashion companies are being faced with a conflict of interest between people, planet, and profit. There’s a major debate happening right now involving one material in particular: leather. According to search platform Lyst, searches for ‘vegan leather’ have increased by 69% year-on-year while searches for ‘faux leather’ have remained constant. Additionally, searches for leather have decreased by 3.5% year-on-year, demonstrating that consumer attitudes are shifting in favour of cruelty-free, eco-friendly alternatives. So consumers are seeking better options but why are fashion brands still lagging behind? Well, luxury leather goods are a huge source of revenue for many fashion houses, accounting for 48 billion USD (33.9bn GBP) of global revenue in 2019, a number that is predicted to increase by a further 16 billion USD (11.3bn GBP) by 2025 (Statista, 2020). According to Vogue Business, supporters of the leather industry claim that leather is in fact sustainable as it is a natural, biodegradable material that utilises waste from the meat production industry.

Despite this being technically true, many people believe this argument is missing the point. Commercial cattle farming is a notorious contributor to the negative environmental impacts of consumption, producing 14.5% of all greenhouse gas emissions. The tanning process that turns animal hides into what we know as leather also involves a significant number of toxic chemicals that find their way into our water systems. With such adverse effects on the environment, can the leather industry really claim to be sustainable? We think not. So what’s the alternative?

Faux leather was initially pitched as the more ethical alternative to real leather and it certainly has its positives. These materials use no animal byproducts which technically makes them vegan and cruelty-free. However, the most common types of faux leather are actually made from petroleum-based plastics such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyurethane (PU) which use fossil fuels and release harmful toxins into the environment. PVC-based materials have become far less common in recent years due to their toxic impact and positive advances have also been made towards improving the production process of PU to make it less toxic (water-based polyurethane dispersion). However, these materials are still non-biodegradable, contributing to global plastic waste. So while faux leathers might be vegan-friendly, they certainly aren’t the eco-friendly alternative we need.

Enter plant-based leathers. Could this be fashion’s answer to the ongoing leather debate? Sustainable brands such as ACBC and Bohema certainly think so! These brands are making waves with their use of leathers derived from plants and bio-waste. From pineapple leaves and mushrooms to cactus plants and grape skins, here are some of the innovative, new alternatives that are changing the future of fashion.

1. Piñatex

Credit: Ananas Anam, the makers of Piñatex®

Piñatex is made using the cellulose fibres of pineapple waste leaves. The pineapple industry produces 40,000 tonnes of pineapple waste every year which would typically be burned or left to rot. With this waste being a byproduct of an existing crop industry, it requires no additional land, water or fertiliser to produce. It also contains none of the harmful toxins of both real and traditional faux leathers.

2. Cactus Leather

Credit: Bohema Clothing | veo.world/brand/bohema-clothing

Cactus leather is another plant-based alternative that has a huge positive impact on the environment. The cactus plant naturally absorbs a high volume of CO2 and can also help to regenerate soil in degraded areas due to its resilient nature. The process of creating cactus leather only uses the mature leaves without damaging the whole plant, allowing for repeat harvest from the same crops, without requiring additional land or environmental resources.

3. Wine Leather

Credit: ACBC | veo.world/brand/acbc

Wine leather is made using pomace: waste comprised of the skin, seeds, and stalks of grape clusters recovered from the winemaking industry. With 26.3 billion litres of wine produced in 2019 alone, this process has the ability to produce an extremely high yield of material with low environmental impact, low production costs and no polluting substances. Wine leather also comes from a renewable source and does not require additional resources to be produced.

While these materials have a far more positive impact on the environment and promise a more sustainable future for leather, it is worth noting that many of these materials are still a work in progress. Many plant-based alternatives are still combined with PU or petroleum-based resins in order to resemble leather, and most are still not fully recyclable or biodegradable yet.

So to answer the question of whether leather can ever be sustainable, the answer is complicated. However, we can all take steps to make better fashion choices and reduce the impact of our consumption habits.
